This surveys the key developments in global finance from the 18th century, looking at patterns and developments in historical perspective. It examines trends in historical perspective, focusing on the rise of currencies, exchange rates and regulatory mechanisms from Gold/Silver Standards to successor arrangements, reviewing the decline of Sterling and rise of the Dollar/Euro; exploring the evolution of banking systems and the importance of bond markets; reviewing the role of key institutions and individuals, and identifying patterns in financial crises from the South Sea Bubble to the global crisis of 2008.
