This explores the historical value of historically-themed feature films, television dramas, and documentaries, particularly, but not exclusively, in an Irish context. Historically-themed feature films, television dramas and documentaries will be viewed and analysed with a view to assessing their contributions to historical understanding. The limitations of these forms will be also be explored. They will be examined under four main thematic headings: political history; social history; military history; cultural history. Irish-made and Irish–themed productions will form the majority, but significant international films, series and documentaries will also be featured. A number of documentary and feature film directors and writers will participate occasionally.
